Last Minute Easter Breaks & Holidays

Easter is just around the corner, but if you haven’t had a chance to book a spring getaway just yet, there’s still plenty of time! If you’re on the hunt for last-minute Easter breaks, Plans Change has you covered. Join us as we share our pick of the best last-minute Easter breaks for 2023.

When is Easter 2023?

This year, Easter Sunday falls on 9th April, just over a week earlier than last year, when it was on 17th April. Good Friday is, therefore, on 7th April (a national Bank Holiday in the UK) and Easter Monday is on 10th April. The Easter school holidays often vary slightly depending on where in the UK you live. However, most children will have their Easter school holiday from Monday 3rd to Friday 14th April 2023.

Easter city break ideas

Banish the winter blues and welcome springtime with an Easter city break. April is the perfect time to see cities, like London, in full bloom. Along with visiting the capital's many parks and gardens, it's a great opportunity to visit the royal palaces, museums and iconic landmarks, which put on special Easter activities for all the family. One of London's most popular Easter attractions is the Lindt Gold Bunny Hunt at Hampton Court Palace (1st - 16th April). Roam around the gardens and find the hidden Lindt Gold Bunny Statues to claim your chocolate treat.

Make the most of your time in London with a springtime show. Harry Potter & The Cursed Child, Wicked and Matilda the Musical are popular performances perfect for families.

And not forgetting the true meaning of Easter, why not join an Easter weekend service at one of London's churches and cathedrals, including Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, St Martin-in-the-Fields or Southwark Cathedral?

Are you thinking of spending Easter in Europe? Budapest is the place to go! Not only is it a beautiful and cultural destination to visit, but it's also home to some of the best Easter celebrations (or Húsvét as it's called in Hungary) in the world. Be sure to visit the Easter market at Vörösmarty Square and pick up a handcrafted souvenir. You'll find hand-woven baskets, beautifully painted eggs and artisan pottery on sale at this time of year. Sample Hungarian street food, like lángos and visit nearby tourist attractions, including Buda Castle, Chain Bridge and the famous thermal baths.

Easter countryside escapes

As the temperatures begin to rise, it’s the idyllic time to book a spring staycation and enjoy some of Britain’s best countryside escapes. The Lake District is a popular choice for an Easter getaway for its stunning springtime scenery and jam-packed events calendar.

Whether you’re visiting the Lake District for a hiking holiday, a romantic weekend away, or a fun family escape, it has something to offer everyone. And while we’re sure you won’t be short of things to add to your itinerary, the carpet of golden daffodils across the shores of Ullswater ‘fluttering and dancing in the breeze’ (to quote Wordsworth) are a must-see!

We also recommend the National Trust Easter Trails for those visiting the Lake District with children. Every year, Cadbury and the National Trust work together to create the most egg-citing Easter egg hunts in the national park. Explore the muddy woodlands, mystical lakes and beautiful nature trails while enjoying various games and craft activities along the way.

Easter is a wonderful time to visit The World of Beatrix Potter at Bowness-on-Windermere. On Easter Sunday, it is hosting a special Easter Peter Rabbit Tea Party. Tickets are available to book online and include entry to the World of Beatrix Potter on the day of the party, afternoon tea, storytime, a free balloon and gift for every child and a photo opportunity with Peter Rabbit himself!

Other countryside locations to visit this Easter include North Wales and the Scottish Highlands. Explore the wild, unspoilt countryside and enjoy a little peace and quiet in the most beautiful settings.

Easter beach and sun holidays

Fancy booking a beach holiday this Easter? There’s nothing like fresh air and sea breeze to blow off the winter cobwebs!

While the UK is undoubtedly home to many stunning seaside locations, Devon is a fantastic place to enjoy an Easter break in the UK. Book a hotel in a coastal town like Torquay for a traditional seaside holiday, complete with beautiful beaches, fish and chips, cream tea and even wild swimming (when the temperatures allow!) Or, if you prefer a more active getaway, North Devon is an idyllic location for watersports enthusiasts. You’ll also find a host of dog-friendly hotels to book in this part of the UK.

While the weather gets a little warmer in the UK at Easter, you’ll need to hop on a plane for guaranteed sunshine! The Greek island of Crete is an excellent destination for a sunny Easter holiday break. While the temperature is a little warmer than here in the UK (averaging between 17-20°C), the island won’t be inundated with tourists like during the peak summer season, meaning you can enjoy a more peaceful and tranquil stay. Have you already ticked Crete off? Other beautiful sun-kissed islands to add to your Easter break shortlist include Rhodes & Santorini.
