The Golf Open St Andrews – a guide on where to stay

This year marks the 150th Open Championship, and to make it even more special, it's taking place at the home of golf itself - the iconic Old Course in St Andrews.

How to get tickets for the 2022 Open

Due to the extremely high demand for tickets, a ballot for the 2022 British Open was opened between July and October 2021 and received just under 1.3 million applications. As a result, all tickets for the British Open 2022 have now been allocated. But if you entered the ballot and were unlucky the first time, there may still be a chance to purchase a ticket through the official Resale Platform.


The ticket ballot for the 151st Open at Royal Liverpool in 2023 is now open and will close on 20th July 2022. Lucky applicants will receive the results in August and September.


Where to stay for the golf Open at St Andrew's

Popular hotels in St Andrews include the likes of The Albany, Fairmont St Andrews, Hotel Du Vin St Andrews, Rusacks, Rufflets and The Old Course itself. However, as The Open is set to bring a record number of visitors to St Andrew's, it's likely that these hotels and others in the town are already fully booked. The good news is that several areas surrounding St Andrews have excellent transport links to The Open. Firstly, we'd suggest searching for hotels in Fife. Scottish cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow are only an hour and 30 minutes away by car from St Andrews, so perfectly doable - as is Dundee, which is just 30 minutes away from The Open.

And finally, in Dundee, there is Hampton by Hilton, Holiday Inn Express and Hotel Indigo, amongst many other hotels with good transport links that will make a convenient base for The Open.

Transport links to The Open

There are buses to St Andrew's, from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee, or you can catch the train from Edinburgh or Aberdeen to Leuchars (a nearby town) and take a short bus ride to St Andrew's. You may even find that some hotels closer to St Andrew's offer shuttle buses and other transport services for added convenience.

It's also worth considering alternative accommodation for The Open. If you're having trouble securing a hotel in St Andrews or Fife, perhaps consider a house share (many residents are opening up their homes to visitors for the tournament), a caravan or even camping!
